Discover Your New Career As A Medical Assistant

A medical assistant is a skilled professional who provides support services in a health clinic or doctor's office. The actual job description will depend on where you work.  What you are and are not permitted to do is strictly regulated by the individual states.

In some (larger) offices you may be asked to do only one or two tasks, whereas in other (smaller) offices you may be asked to do about everything from drawing blood to taking out the trash.

Is becoming A Medical Assistant Right For you?

Before you decide if becoming a medical assistant is the right choice for you, learn more about your responsibilities and day to day duties. Here is just a few of the duties you are likely to be asked to carry out:

* Welcoming and assisting patients.
In general, you will be assisting patients with a variety of their needs. You may be asked to greet patients and their families in the waiting room. You will likely be transporting patients to examining rooms, treatments and to therapy sessions. You will probably be responsible for helping patients with their gowns, giving disrobing instructions and transporting them to their cars when they are discharged. You may even be asked to record vital signs on the patient's chart for the doctor's evaluation.

* Recording the medical histories of patients.
You will likely interview patients to bring up to date their medical history or to work up a preliminary medical history, as patients files frequently do not immediately follow the patient.

* Assisting the physician in patient examinations.
You may be asked to help the doctor maneuver a patient, calm a patient, retrieve supplies, draw blood, collect urine samples or administer vaccinations.

* Answering phones and scheduling patients.
You may find yourself in a busy office, where you will be asked to spend your time in more of an administrative role, which actually requires more advanced medical knowledge than assisting in patient examinations.

* Medical billing.
You may be assigned the task of filling out medical bills and insurance forms for patients. Insurance companies require special coding on medical bills, which some medical assistants make a career performing just this one task.  You may also be asked to speak with insurance companies to request approval for certain treatments and procedures. Phone skills are a must for a good medical assistant.

*Opportunities for advancement.
Many medical assistants chose to focus on the administrative side of the job, such as billing and scheduling, reporting to the office manager instead of the physician or head nurse. It is not uncommon to find an office manager got their start as a medical assistant.

Medical Assistant Certification is Available

 Certification is available from a number of certifying bodies, private colleges, community colleges and through online courses.  Choose carefully where you receive your training though, because it will likely be important to the physician or head nurse reviewing your job application.
