Isn't It Time For A Change?
Everyday in your neighborhood, throughout your city, all across the state in which you reside, from coast to coast around the country, and yes even worldwide, thousands of elderly patients are mistreated all around us. Disabled, weak, sick, brittle, and some even without a voice of their own.
The caring souls that once were raising us or someone we loved now tossed into lion’s den and forgotten. Just left to die. Left waiting in the dark shadows of a stale aired “community living” home for the elderly with nothing more than sorrow in their heart, waiting for a toe tag with a body number.
Personal experience led me down the dark twisted halls of many nursing homes, senior care centers, and pipe dream buildings sold as assisted living facilities. I was saddened beyond tears when my 90 year old great grandmother was placed in a nursing home for her last precious days on Earth. Saddened however somewhat relieved that she would at least be in a medically certified facility with tons of nurses, nurses aides, doctors, medical equipment and supplies, and medication to accommodate her every cry so that she would be as comfortable as possible and given the proper medical care at all times. I will never forget the first time I saw her in that dark, eerie, cold, almost lifeless prison. Here I am 18 years of age with my first baby girl with me so that I can introduce her to her great great grandmother for the first and what I didn’t know then, only time. My mother and grandmother by our sides we cried a little before we went inside and tried to prepare ourselves to be strong for great grandma Leonard.
As we entered the revolving door this horrid smell of feces, urine, body odor, death, and fear smacked us in the face like a wrought iron skillet. So strong in fact that it was very hard to breathe and almost impossible to not vomit. Standing in absolute horror and shock and emotional meltdown I began to observe the walls of this place and what lay behind them. There were elderly men and women just placed like pieces on a checker board here and there. Barely covered up, half dressed, slumped almost completely out of their chairs and into the floor. Soaking with body fluids and most of them groaning in pain, groaning for help, and it was if they did not even exist to ANY of the medical personnel on duty. I asked one guy who was sitting on his rear end drinking a nice tall refreshing iced beverage consuming just about everything in sight like a garbage disposal if anyone was going to help these people out and clean them up. He just looked at me as if I were totally out of line and said,”I am sorry LITTLE GIRL I didn’t know you were my boss for the day.” And about that time all of his co-workers chimed in with their little giggles and comments like kindergartners trying to win a game of sticks and stones with me. My heart broke at that very instant.
How could these soul-less, spineless, cold-hearted monsters possibly be in charge of the care (or lack there of) of our loved ones, disabled veterans, the very same people who created us and nurtured us when mommy and daddy weren’t around? The courageous people who once sacrificed themselves and their lives and families to honor our well being? This is how we repay them? My great grandmother was administered a deadly dose of the wrong medication and asphyxiated on her own saliva, vomit, and feces the very next night. It was determined that she laid in that bed suffering for TEN hours before anyone ever found her!!!! She passed away and I never saw her alive again. No one did. How is it that the world can cry over something as horrible and haunting as September 11 and at the same time turn a blind eye to the torturous, demonic, murders of our older generations??? I just don’t understand…. THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS AND TO MAKE A CHANGE is to take a stand right now.
